The Division of Paediatrics is an integral part of University Medical Centre Ljubljana and the Department of Oncology and Haematology as such serves as national paediatric oncology centre for Slovenia.
Dedicated in clinical management of paediatric cancer patients, as well as research and education. In recent years the centre’s activities have been expanded with an attempt to propagate the knowledge between countries of former Yugoslavia and other countries in the Eastern European region.
UMC Ljubljana is the leading health care institution in Slovenia. Thanks to the outstanding achievements in the field of health care, it is comparable to some of the best health care institutions in Europe.

Currently 9 physicians are employed, specialised in general pediatrics and with subsequent pediatric oncology specialisation, 3 clinical psychologists, 2 kinesiologists, 1 dietician, 1 physiotherapist.
We provide comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for children and adolescents with both malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases.
The department has 11 rooms with 19 beds, two separate rooms for autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, day hospital with 5 beds and out-patient clinic. Every year approximately 60 new children and adolescents with cancer are treated, even above 18 years depending on pathology.
The Department of Oncology and Haematology is closely connected with other divisions of pediatrics, pediatric surgery clinical pharmacology, anaesthesiology, resuscitation, intensive care unit and clinical genetics.

Advancing Pediatric Oncology: Slovenia’s International Collaboration through SIOPE Networks and Clinical Research
Physicians of the Department of Oncology and hematology are active members of SIOPE, joined in Slovenian society of pediatric Oncology. In the last 15 years substantial effort was made to actively participate in several SIOPE clinical trials and groups, including EpSSG and Expert group. Organisational skills can be demonstrated by organisation of international events (CELG meeting, SIOPEN meeting, Expert meeting) and participation in EU funded projects such as JANE, EUNetCCC, DIAMONDS study.
